Oggi sono felice di presentarvi Federica Spaccatrosi, meglio conosciuta come La Pondi Dancehall Queen, giovane ballerina, insegnante di danza e Twerk ambassador italiana, che ha recentemente fondato il primo corso di Twerk a Roma. Ballerina, coreografa, insegnante ed ambasciatrice del Twerk in Italia. Quando ti sei appassionata alla danza?
A 9 anni , dopo una breve parentesi con la ginnastica artistica. Ho iniziato con la Danza Moderna , dove ho appreso le basi anche di Danza Classica, e a 16 anni ho virato per l’Hip Hop, appassionandomi alla Street dance in generale . Nel 2008 ho scoperto il mondo della Dancehall che mi ha decisamente segnata più di qualunque altro stile. E’ stato amore al primo passo e non l’ho più lasciato!
Dopo anni, non credevo di potermi appassionare allo stesso modo ad un altro ballo, invece, con mia grande sorpresa, è arrivato il Twerk e ho imparato ad amarlo nella stessa misura.
Nel 2008 ti avvicini alla Dancehall, studiando con Joss Mad Queen ed Alevanille. Puoi spiegarci cosa si intende per Dancehall? Cos’è, invece, il Twerk?
Un occhio inesperto fa fatica a distinguere le differenze tra il Dancehall Queen Style , la parte femminile della Dancehall , dal Twerk. In realtà le differenze sono davvero tante e nette.
La Dancehall è un mondo imprescindibile dal suo contesto: potrei dire che non è solo un ballo , una danza, ma un insieme di elementi culturali propri della Jamaica, della sua musica, del suo popolo .
Il Twerk ha origini similari alla Dancehall in quanto legate anch’esse all’Africa , ma è un tipo di attività molto più tecnica: l’impostazione del corpo, il movimento stesso , sono più statici e concentrati sul movimento del bacino. Nel Twerk c ‘ è un lavoro molto intenso sulle isolation delle varie parti del corpo. Bisogna imparare a legare, slegare e controllare ogni muscolo coinvolto nella danza.
Dal punto di vista coreografico, il Twerk subisce influenze dalla Dancehall, ma anche da altri stili come Hip Hop , Voguing , Exotic Dance , Strip Plastic.
Quando ho iniziato i tuoi corsi, ho provato una sensazione di assoluta libertà come se corpo e mente fossero finalmente connessi, lontano da stress e preconcetti. Purtroppo, capita spesso di incontrare persone che ancora associano alcuni tipi di danza alla ricerca disperata di uomini da parte di donne maliziose ed esibizioniste. Secondo te, perché nel nostro Paese è diffusa una visione così distorta e negativa di questa danza?
L’Italia è un Paese particolare sotto questo aspetto. Attorno alla novità si crea sempre un alone di curiosità , che a volte viene celata da un pregiudizio . Credo che sia una tappa obbligata di un percorso, lo stesso che ha intrapreso la Pole Dance per affermarsi nel nostro Paese.
Queste discipline vengono viste con sospetto perché guardano ‘avanti’, ad una donna moderna che lavora su se stessa per piacersi e per piacere … e sì, è ancora un argomento tabù. Dobbiamo ancora capire che una donna si veste, balla, ha un determinato atteggiamento solo perché questo la fa star bene. Molti uomini sono spaventati dalle donne troppo sicure del loro valore, motivo per cui possono disprezzare queste discipline.
Stai dedicando la tua carriera alla pratica, all’insegnamento e alla diffusione di Twerk e Dancehall in Italia. Penso a shows, contests ed esibizioni al fianco di grandi artisti come Shaggy, RDX, Cham, Stylo G, Boom da Bash, Sud Sound System, ma anche nei live shows dei Major Lazer, Tommy Lee, Mr Lexx, Ward 21.
Con quale artista italiano ed internazionale, che non sono ancora nella lista, ti piacerebbe collaborare?
Sono davvero soddisfatta della mia carriera da ballerina… Ci sono alcune serate che non dimenticherò mai. Ho lavorato principalmente per artisti ed eventi Dancehall, ma anche sui generi Trap , Drum & Bass, esperienze che sono servite molto per aprire i miei orizzonti.
Se proprio dovessi esprimere un desiderio, mi piacerebbe lavorare con la scena Hip Hop. Sono sicura che il Twerk ci stia davvero bene.
Qual è il punto di forza delle tue esibizioni?
Il sorriso che crea un’atmosfera più leggera e goliardica ; la grinta che mi dà la musica e mi fa usare il 200% delle mie energie ; la tecnica e la precisione nell’eseguire movimenti puliti sui ritmi più diversi.
Nel 2013 hai aperto il primo corso di Dancehall DHF a Roma e nel 2015 il primo di Twerk. Il successo è immediato: numerose strutture si interessano a questa novità e vengono organizzati stage, incontri , masterclass in tutta Italia. Che rapporto hai con le tue ‘studentesse’? Sono iscritti anche uomini?
Le mie ragazze sono il mio tutto, sono il futuro, sono le pioniere di una realtà che anno dopo anno diventa più grande e più reale. Nel giro di pochi anni, sono riuscita a creare una rete di appassionate non solo a Roma ma in tutta Italia. Tutto questo mi riempie di gioia. Mi emoziono spesso e a volte mi sono anche commossa vedendo i loro progressi. Sono incredibili!
Ho avuto anche dei ragazzi e mi piacerebbe fare una Twerk class riservata agli uomini.
Si può frequentare un corso di dancehall o twerk senza aver studiato alcun tipo di danza?
Assolutamente sì!
Lo scorso Febbraio hai partecipato alla prima puntata di ITALIA’S GOT TALENT 2017 portando il Twerk sul grande schermo davanti ai giudici Claudio Bisio , Luciana Littizzetto, Frank Matano e Nina Zilli. Qual è stato l’aspetto più difficile di quest’esperienza?
Italia’s got talent è stata un’esperienza incredibile! Il tempo dell’esibizione è volato ed è andato tutto meglio di quello che potessi aspettarmi. Ho avuto tantissime views dei miei video e l’aumento di followers sui miei canali!
C’è un incontro che ha inciso nella tua carriera?
Elena Fraules è stata la persona che più mi ha ispirato, è stata il punto di riferimento principale nella mia attività di ballerina e insegnante di Twerk. Ad Aprile ho avuto modo di studiare con lei a Roma e trascorrere del tempo insieme, che mi ha permesso di creare un bel legame.
I suoi complimenti sono una delle cose più belle che mi sia successa.
Lasceresti l’Italia per fare carriera in un altro Paese? Se sì, dove andresti?
Non credo. Mi piacerebbe andare a studiare fuori, in Russia, in Jamaica , negli USA , ma non trasferirmi. La mia missione è qui, la mia gente è qui. La mia sfida è far accettare il Twerk in Italia, e non andrò via sconfitta . E poi… mi mancherebbe troppo il caffè !
Cosa non può mancare nella tua playlist?
Tanti tanti pezzi di Vybz Kartel , diversi Major Lazer , e un pò di Jason Derulo! In realtà, sono una maniaca e la mia playlist conta 5000 pezzi! Mi piace variare e scoprire sempre nuovi generi.
Se Federica fosse un film, un libro e un album, quale sarebbe?
Flashdance , Il Gabbiano Jonathan Livingston , Bad di Michael Jackson.
Quali sono i progetti in cantiere?
Non ho progetti pratici in vista… tutte le mie energie attuali sono rivolte alla crescita del Twerk in Italia, quindi continuare ad invitare ballerine di tutto il mondo per insegnare questo stile nella mia città e condividere con le mie ragazze tutto quello che so!
Sogno nel cassetto di Federica?
Sogno un mondo in cui le donne sono libere di esprimersi come desiderano senza sentirsi oppresse da quello che la società impone di essere. Un mondo dove le donne sono soddisfatte del proprio corpo anche se non perfetto e sono libere di dire e fare ciò che vogliono senza che nessuno possa fermarle con qualsiasi pretesto.

Today on the blog I’m happy to introduce Federica Spaccatrosi, better known as La Pondi Dancehall Queen, a young Italian dancer, dance teacher and Twerk ambassador who has recently founded the first – and still ongoing – Twerk course in Rome.

Dancer, choreographer, dance teacher and Twerk ambassador in Italy. When did you take up dancing seriously ?
When I was 9 years old, after a short period doing artistic gymnastics. I started with Modern Dance, where I also learned Classic Dance. As a 16-year-old, I turned to Hip Hop, and through that I got into street dance in general.
In 2008, I discovered the world of Dancehall, which has actually influenced me more than any other style. It was love at the first sight, and I have kept with it ever since! After so many years, I didn’t dream I could ever become equally enthusiastic about any other kind of dance. But, then, to my surprise, along came Twerk, and I fell in love with it in the same way.
In 2008 you got into Dancehall, studying with Joss Mad Queen and Alevanille. Can you tell us what Dancehall means? And for that matter, for those who don’t know, can you tell us what Twerk is?
For non- experts, it could be hard to tell the differences between Dancehall Queen Style, the female part of Dancehall, and Twerk. In fact, the differences are not just many but also pretty distinct.
You can’t talk about Dancehall without considering its context: I could say that it’s not just a dance, but a mix of Jamaica’s cultural elements, music, and people.
The Twerk has similar origins to Dancehall as it is also linked to Africa, but it is a much more technical activity: the positioning of the body and the movement itself are more static, and focusing around the pelvis. In Twerk, there is a lot of work involving the isolation of the various parts of the body. You have to be able to control every muscle involved in the dance. From a choreographic point of view, Twerk is influenced by Dancehall, but also by other styles such as Hip Hop, Voguing, Exotic Dance, Strip Plastic.
Since I started your dance classes, I’ve felt a sense of absolute freedom as if my body and my mind were finally fully connected, far from stress and previous preconceptions. Unfortunately, one often happens to meet people who still associate some types of dance with vampish women on the pull for men. Do you think that such distorted and negative view is widespread in our country?
Italy is a weird country in this way. New things always attract curiosity, sometimes concealing a sense of prejudice underneath. I think this is a necessary step. This is how things take their course. The same happened with Pole Dance when it began to establish itself in Italy. These dances are still viewed with suspicion, because they point the way to women taking control of their own lives, and yet, for some people it is still a taboo.
By now we should understand that if women dress or dance or have a particular attitude then it’s because that’s what makes them happy. Many men are get nervous in the presence of women who are too self-confident, that’s the reason they look with suspicion upon these dances.
You’re focusing on your career, on practice and teaching Twerk and Dancehall in Italy. I mean, performing in shows, contests and exhibitions with major artists such as Shaggy, RDX, Cham, Stylo G, Boom da Bash, Sud Sound System, but also dancing live for Major Lazer, Tommy Lee, Mr Lexx, Ward21. Which Italian and International artists that you haven’t worked with yet, would you like to work with?
Well, I’m really happy with my career as a dancer… There have been some evenings that I will never forget. I have mainly worked for artists and Dancehall events, but also in other genres like Trap, Drum & Bass, all the experiences I have broadened my horizons. If I could have one wish, I’d like to work on the Hip Hop scene.
What is the particular strong point of your shows?
My smile, which creates a lighter and happier atmosphere; the stamina, which music gives me and lets me use 200% of my energy; the technique and the precision in carrying out clear-cut dance moves to completely different rhythms.
In 2013 you opened the first dance course of DHF Dancehall in Rome, and in 2015, the first Twerk course as well. The success was immediate: several organizations got interested leading to your organizing ‘stages’ and masterclass all over Italy. What relationship do you have with your students? Also, are there many male students?
My girls, my everything… They are my future and the pioneers of something getting bigger year by year.
In the space of a few years, I’ve succeeded in creating a network of appassionate not only in Rome, but in all Italy. This has been a joy for me! I get really excited seeing the progress they have made. They’re fantastic!
I also had male students, and I would like to start a Twerk class just for men.
Can anyone follow a dancehall or twerk course without having previously studied any other type of dance?
Absolutely!
Last February you took a part in the first episode of ITALY’S GOT TALENT 2017 bringing Twerk onto the tv screen before the judges Claudio Bisio, Luciana Littizzetto, Frank Matano e Nina Zilli. What was the most difficult aspect of this experience?
IGT 2017 was an incredible experience! The time of my performance just flew past and went even better than I could’ve dreamed of. My video has received so many hits and the number of followers on ‘Social’ has increased.
Is there a meeting that has had a special impact on your career?
Elena Fraules is the person who has inspired me most. She was the first point of reference both as practicing dancer and as a twerk teacher. In April, I was able to study with her in Rome, and we were able to spend time together, allowing me to form a good connection. Her compliments are one of the best things that have happened to me.
Would you leave Italy for a career in another country? If so, which country would you go to?
I don’t think so… I would like to go abroad but only to study . Maybe in Russia, Jamaica, U.S., but not to move there for good. My mission is here, my people are here. My challenge is to get Twerk accepted in all of Italy, and I won’t accept defeat. Besides, I’d miss espresso too much!
What do you have on your playlist?
So many songs by Vybz Kartel, Major Lazer and a few by Jason Derulo. In fact, I’m an addict and my playlist has 5,000 songs. I like variety and to discover different genres.

What projects do you have in the pipeline?
I have no practical projects in view… all my energy is taken up with the growth of Twerk in Italy. So, I want to continue to invite dancers of different countries to teach this style in my city and share everything I know with my girls!
What dream do you have in your cubbyhole?
My dream is a world where all women are free to express themselves without feeling oppressed by what convention dictates. A world where women can be happy with their own bodies and can be free to do and say what they want without let or hindrance.
